The Lyons Roar was a school newspaper managed by the students, with one of the teachers acting as the advisor. For many years, it served as the yearbook before an official yearbook was ever published, with the May issue containing many of the things you see in yearbooks today, e.g., the activities of the Seniors through their years in high school, their "Last Will and Testament", their "Favorite Things" and what they were expected to be doing after graduation. Whatever the students wanted to publish, as long as it was in good taste, was permissible.

Some of the features of the Lyons Roar were sports scores, news about things the school clubs were doing, gossip about dating couples, jokes, and anything the staff thought would be of interest to the students. It was like the Facebook of the era with a little bit of this and a little bit of that. It could be very entertaining and humorous and the students loved it.

 

The Lyons Roar also gave the students on the staff an opportunity to be creative, inclusive (the staff tried to include something about everybody), to develop their composition and writing skills, to hone their typing skills, and to get feedback on their reporting. If you went over the line of good taste, you got immediate negative feedback and when you published something really cool, you got immediate accolades.
