How to Read Bulldogs Today

Bulldogs Today follows the current Toombs County High School football season. The page brings together the Bulldogs’ record and schedule, Region 3-AAA standings, statewide AJC rankings and Maxwell projections in one place.

The information is updated throughout the season by the LHSAA Sports Editor.

At a Glance

The statistics at the top of Bulldogs Today provide a quick snapshot of the season:

Overall Record shows the Bulldogs’ wins and losses in all games played during the season.

Region Record shows wins and losses in games against Region 3-AAA opponents.

Region Standing shows where Toombs County currently stands among the eight teams in Region 3-AAA.

AJC State AAA Ranking shows Toombs County’s position in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s statewide Class AAA rankings. This is different from the Region Standing. The AJC ranking compares the Bulldogs with Class AAA teams across Georgia.

Last Game and Next Game

These panels provide a quick look backward and forward: the result of the Bulldogs’ most recently completed game and the next game on the schedule.

Region 3-AAA Standings

Toombs County competes in Class AAA, also written as 3A, and is a member of Region 3-AAA.

The eight Region 3-AAA schools are Appling County, Beach, Brantley County, Islands, Johnson (Savannah), Pierce County, Tattnall County and Toombs County.

The Overall column shows each team’s season record. The Region column shows its record against Region 3-AAA opponents. Reg % is the percentage of its region games that the team has won.

For purposes of the standings displayed on this website, teams are ordered first by region winning percentage and then by overall winning percentage. When both are identical, the teams are shown as tied. Because this is the LHSAA website, Toombs County is displayed first when the Bulldogs are part of such a tie.

The standings shown here are intended as a convenient season snapshot. Official region placement and any required tiebreakers are governed by Region 3-AAA and GHSA rules.

Bulldogs Schedule & Results

The schedule lists Toombs County’s regular-season games in date order, including the opponent, home or away location, and final score after each game is completed.

If the Bulldogs advance to the state playoffs, postseason games may be added.

AJC Class AAA Top 10

The AJC Class AAA Top 10 is the statewide ranking published by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Unlike the Region 3-AAA standings, which are based on game records, the AJC Top 10 is an editorial ranking produced by the newspaper’s high school sports coverage.

The date shown with the rankings tells you when the rankings displayed on Bulldogs Today were last updated.

Maxwell Projections

The Maxwell Ratings are produced by mathematician Loren Maxwell, founder of the Georgia High School Football Historians Association. Maxwell’s system uses mathematical analysis of football results and historical performance to rate teams and project game outcomes.

For upcoming Region 3-AAA games, Bulldogs Today displays Maxwell’s projected winner, projected loser and Margin, the projected margin of victory.

These are mathematical projections, not guarantees of what will happen on Friday night.

How the State Playoffs Work

The Georgia High School Association uses its Post Season Ranking Formula (PSR) in determining playoff qualification and seeding.

The PSR has three components:

The system therefore considers not only whether a team wins, but also the strength of the schedule it plays.

Special rules apply to non-GHSA opponents. For example, a win over a non-GHSA opponent receives a weighted value of 0.9 rather than 1.0, subject to GHSA’s limits on how many such wins may count.

Playoff Seeding

Under the current GHSA system, region champions are guaranteed a home game in the first round and are seeded first according to their PSR. The remaining playoff teams are then seeded according to their PSR.

If teams finish with identical PSR totals, GHSA specifies additional tiebreakers, beginning with head-to-head results, followed by WP, OWP and OOWP.

If Toombs County advances to the playoffs, Bulldogs Today will add postseason information and results as the Bulldogs continue their season.
